Observations about the Spanish Culture

  • You're much less likely to annoy a Spaniard if you try and talk. If you're talkative and sociable, Spaniards are more forgiving of your butchering their language.
  • School aged kids running around kicking a soccer ball in the plaza at 11pm on a school night? NBD.
  • If you order a cerveza (beer) or a caña (half pint), they'll bring you a cerveza (or a caña). That's it-they don't ask you what kind or anything. You asked for a beer, so they're just going to bring you one.
  • Pinchos, merienda, tapas. You don't even have to ask. They just come with your generic nameless beer.
  • I don't care what they say about Americans and our eating habits, those Spaniards eat all. day. long.
  • Vale. Always just vale.
  • Joder, jolín, jodito/a (fuck, fuck, fucked, respectively) are all perfectly acceptable ways to express yourself, no matter who you are, how old you are, where you are, or who is around. ¡Joder!
  • Hombre (man) is a perfectly acceptable thing to cal anyone, even your 12 year old daughter.
  • "Bueno, pues nada" (alright, well, nothing) is a perfectly acceptable thing to fill the lull in any conversation at any time.
  • Venga (come here) does not mean "come here." It basically means anything you want it to mean. "Bueno, pues nada. Venga, hombre." is an example of how you might use five distinct words to say absolutely nothing.
  • Soccer is the supreme law of the land. You must align yourself with a team. Choose wisely.
  • You may struggle with bills; you may have had to sell your car. Your children are using last year's school supplies because you can't afford new ones. It's the crisis, after all. But you always, always have enough money for a caña in the plaza on Friday night.
  • I believe you when some of you say that when Spaniards go out, the "goal isn't to get drunk." But it's easy to say that when you stay out until 6am.
  • You say hasta luego ("until later," sometimes translated as "later" or "see you later") to everyone, even people you are clearly not going to "see later."
  • Bueno, pues nada, hombre.
  • Venga.
